Cash Strapped Brits Opting for Staycations

Posted: Mar 24, 2009 | Category: Holidays

staycation If you have never heard the term before, a Staycation is a vacation where you simply stay at home. As the credit crunch bites ever deeper it’s no surprise that an increasing number of Britons are choosing to Staycation rather than go abroad for some sun.

The U.K. has traditionally been a popular holiday destination with a wealth of history, great hotels, restaurants and plenty to do. Although overseas travel ranks alongside moving house and having an operation for stressfulness, many Brits still like to head off to the Mediterranean for some sunshine. These habits appear to be changing as UK airports report a continuing decline in passenger figures.

While this trend is bad for airlines, tour operators and all the support service providers, like Gatwick parking facilities and airport hotels, it’s likely to be very good for the UK’s domestic holiday industry.

The one thing the UK lacks is reliable sunshine. If you are planning to Staycation this year, and you have a family, it’s worthwhile doing a little research and making a list of all the local attractions that you have never visited. When the sun shines you and your family can enjoy a cheap day out at the beach or in the countryside, but if the weather isn’t good you’ll not be bored or left wondering what to do to entertain your children.
